The Birds + the Bees (and Butterflies)
This project explores the intersection of different species through the medium of play, utilizing a small 10’ x 10’ square site. The playscape is situated on a planter box, wrapping around a large tree and creating a new habitat for engagement. The BBB is made of fun, ambiguous shapes for children to play on: large curving benches, circular cutouts, and twisty climbing poles. The playscape is materially simple, using wood as the primary structure, a mesh to collect fallen leaves for birds, and a series of metal climbing pipes that double as a waterline to enrich the planter boxes attached. The BBB easily melds these play shapes with small habitats and perches for visiting species. The planters are filled with local Michigan flowers that attract the three species, drawing them in to interact with the children. The objective of the project is to use form to engage and create interactions between different species in a fun, playful manner.
